Current Activity

It has been awhile since I have updated the site.  I have been working the bugs out of the car and doing some final details.

Work Finally begins - Teardown

Memorial Day 2005.  Car is out at my buddy Bob's shop waiting for complete disassembly.  Started early in the morning and most of the car was apart by that evening.  Finished up removing the dash and wiring the following day.  They say that the number of days that it takes to disassemble the car is the number of years it will take to put it back together.  So I am right in line with meeting that goal.

Front Sheet Metal

The front frame rails, shock towers and torque boxes were gone.  I decided to replace everything on the front of the car.  Started with the drivers side and worked my way around.  I built a jig to keep the car lined up during the process.  This is allot of work.  About 100 hours of labor involved and that is why the mustang shops charge $4000 in labor to complete.

Rear Sheet Metal

Removed the tail light panel, trunk floors and rear cross member.  Lower portion of the inner wheel house has rust damage (both sides).  Started with the passengers side and welded in a patch to repair it.

Floor Pan Install

Started by removing what was left of the drivers side floor pan.  Really all that was holding the car together was the seat pans.  The front part of the rear torque box was rusted so I welded in a patch.

Engine and Transmission

Decided to bring the engine back to the house to work on it over the winter.  It is a 351 Cleveland 4V.  After checking the casting numbers I found that the block is not original to the car.  The block is a D2AE-CA block with a date code of 2L18 (December 18, 1972) making it a 1973 Cobra Jet engine.  The block also has the four bolt mains.  The heads are D3ZX open chamber 4V heads.  The intake is a D1ZX-9425-DA which is over the counter aluminum intake Ford sold that was basically the same intake as the 351 Boss intake.  I plan to take it to the machine shop for cleaning and inspection, then most likely I will sell it.
